Manchester United Draw At Leeds As Unwanted Streak Continues

Bryan Mbeumo’s goal cancelled out by Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Manchester United slump to their worst league start since 1986.

Manchester United (2.90) drew 1-1 at Leeds on Sunday and remain without a Premier League away win this season. The result left Michael Carrick’s side with seven points from seven games and the club’s worst start since 1986.

A Fiery Derby Without Enough Quality

The match began with an early flurry of yellow cards. Leeds (2.55) had the first big chance when Nico Elvedi headed down from six yards, and Senne Lammens palmed it away. United then missed an even bigger one at the other end.

Bryan Mbeumo failed to steer Youri Tielemans’ cross into the corner. He made up for it on 35 minutes. Mbeumo sneaked behind James Justin to guide another Tielemans delivery into the corner. Leeds equalised six minutes after the restart.

Tarik Muharemovic’s knockdown from a corner reached Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who swept the ball home. Bruno Fernandes fired narrowly wide later, and the game faded into a draw. Leeds extended their unbeaten home run to eight matches.

Carrick’s Cautious Setup

Carrick switched to a three-man defence at Elland Road. He paired Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba behind Fernandes and Tielemans. That change made United more compact but also blunted their attack. It looked like a damage-limitation plan. After they went ahead, United never looked capable of adding a second.

Carrick stood calmly on the touchline and showed little emotion. He also stayed measured in his news conference.

“I understand the situation doesn’t look great but I have no doubts we can go on a good run,” he said, insisting the performance felt like a fresh start.

A Season Drifting Downwards

United have one league win this season, over promoted Ipswich. They have not won in any competition since beating Sabah 4-0 on September 10. They also exited the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle for a second year in a row.

They now sit 14 points behind leaders Manchester City. The week included more bad news. Lisandro Martinez criticised the club’s hierarchy for a lack of summer spending after the Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid.

Ruben Amorim lost his job within 24 hours of a 1-1 draw with Leeds last season. Carrick took over on a short-term basis in January and earned a two-year contract in May. The last time United started this badly, they sacked the manager in early November and hired Alex Ferguson.

The Jam-Packed Schedule Offers No Relief

Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Kieran McKenna are all available if United change course. The club has not pushed that button yet.

They face Como (2.27) in the Champions League on Wednesday. They then host Bournemouth (3.85) at Old Trafford on Sunday. Carrick wants a response from his players. The squad needs wins soon, because patience at Old Trafford rarely lasts long.
