Shortlist: The Three Managers Linked To Manchester United Job As Pressure Mounts On Carrick

Pressure grows on Michael Carrick after Manchester United’s draw with Tottenham, with several managers linked to his job.

Pressure is mounting on Michael Carrick after Manchester United’s 1-1 home draw with 10-man Tottenham. Reports link Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann with the Old Trafford job, though United have not yet moved against Carrick.

Carrick Under Heavy Scrutiny

United (2.70) have collected just six points from their opening six Premier League matches. They sit 13th in the table and have already exited the Carabao Cup. Carrick signed an extension through 2028 after leading United back into the Champions League last season.

The club’s hierarchy reportedly wants to avoid a reactionary dismissal so early in the campaign. A crucial week now looms, with an away match against Atletico Madrid (1.98) followed by a trip to Leeds. Reports suggest INEOS could face a difficult decision if results do not improve quickly.

Eddie Howe: The English Option

Howe is unattached after leaving Newcastle (2.10) during the summer. Football Insider reports he is open to speaking with United if the job becomes vacant. He took charge at St James’ Park in 2021 when the club faced relegation.

He guided Newcastle into the Champions League and delivered their first major domestic trophy in 70 years. United officials reportedly rate his Premier League experience highly. The 48-year-old is understood to view the United role as an attractive opportunity.

Antonio Conte: The Serial Winner

Italian reports claim Conte is close to reaching an agreement with United. Journalist Enzo Bucchioni made the claim in his TuttoMercatoWeb column. Italian outlet Calciomercato says United are seriously considering a change, and that Conte would accept the call. Conte has been out of work since leaving Napoli at the end of last season.

He previously won the Premier League with Chelsea and also managed Tottenham. Those reports should be treated with caution, as United have not planned to sack Carrick yet.

Former United striker Teddy Sheringham doubts the fit: “They’re too pragmatic,” he said, citing Jose Mourinho’s difficulties at the club.

Julian Nagelsmann: The Long-Term Project

Reports say representatives of Nagelsmann are open to hearing United’s plans. They would assess whether the project matches his footballing philosophy. Some sources suggest senior figures doubt Carrick is the right long-term profile. Other online claims that United have already confirmed Nagelsmann appear unverified and unreliable.

United have given no official indication of any change at the top. Carrick still retains the backing of the boardroom for now. His next two matches could prove decisive for his future at the club. A strong result at Atletico Madrid would ease the pressure considerably.
