Ex-Springboks and Bulls player Zane Kirchner was appointed head coach of George-based Phangela SWD Eagles in January, taking over from Anton Moolman. His transformative journey has taken him home to one of the oldest rugby teams in South Africa.
Kirchner’s impact is becoming increasingly evident in the SA Cup, providing a remarkable story of leadership, resilience and ambition.
From Player to Mentor: Kirchner’s Evolution
Kirchner was a 17-year-old fledgling when his professional rugby career took off. After spending 5 years with Griquas, he was signed by the Blue Bulls, making 43 appearances with them. The versatile player was comfortable not only as a fullback but in wing and centre as well. His talents were formally recognised by selectors for the Springboks (3.74) in 2009, playing a total of 31 games with the four-time world champions. After spending 6 years with British teams Leinster, Dragons and Bristol Bears, he returned to South Africa.
His coaching career started in 2022. He took on the role of assistant coach. Using his own experience, his focus was mainly on backline strategies. His commitment to the job did not go unnoticed. Moolman backed his promotion to head coach in 2025. Kirchner was wise to the responsibility. He said on his social media, “This is an opportunity to serve and hopefully show each of these men the quality they all behold to becoming the best version of themselves.”
Kirchner’s comeback to George – where he was born – is not just a career decision; it is a sincere dedication to enhancing the local rugby community and motivating the youth. He focuses on community involvement and the importance of diligence and determination, striving to create a lasting impact that transcends game outcomes.
Revitalising the SWD Eagles: Strategies and Aspirations
Kirchner strives to instil excellence and discipline in all of his players. He feels a sense of responsibility to ensure continuous improvement and give back to the sport and his community. In an interview following the SWD Eagles’ defeat to the Airlink Pumas, he remarked that he felt positive about the start of the game. While acknowledging that they knew the outing to Nelspruit was going to be a big challenge. The focus has now shifted to “getting the little things right” and concentrating on getting the set piece balls right.
His thoughts about the SA Cup are positive, saying that it is an opportunity to challenge players against the Currie Cup environment. This is a rare opportunity in South African rugby.
