Liverpool has agreed a deal worth €150 million (£128m) to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. This sets a new British transfer record.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is expected to travel to Merseyside in the coming days for his medical and contract signing. It brings an end to one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas.
Record-Breaking Numbers
The deal smashes the current Premier League record of €121 million that Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernández in January 2023. It also surpasses the £115 million Chelsea (21.10) spent on Moisés Caicedo from Brighton last summer.
For context, Liverpool’s previous record signing was Darwin Núñez, who cost £85 million from Benfica in 2022. Wirtz’s fee is nearly double that amount.
The transfer makes Wirtz the most expensive German player in history. This beats the €80 million Chelsea paid for Kai Havertz in 2020. To put that in perspective, Wirtz’s fee alone is almost equivalent to both Havertz transfers combined. From Chelsea to Arsenal, he moved for €75 million in 2023.
What Liverpool is Getting
Wirtz has been on Europe’s radar since helping Leverkusen win their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2023-24. That campaign saw them go unbeaten across all 34 league games. Wirtz contributed 11 goals and 12 assists in 32 appearances.
This past season, despite Leverkusen’s slight dip in form, Wirtz remained productive with 10 goals and 13 assists in 30 Bundesliga matches. He also netted six times in nine Champions League games.
The Germany international’s market value currently stands at €140 million, suggesting Leverkusen has driven a hard bargain. Backed by pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG, the German club held firm on its valuation throughout negotiations.
Liverpool’s Statement of Intent
This signing represents Liverpool’s biggest ever investment in a single player and shows their ambition ahead of the new season. Manager Arne Slot will be tasked with integrating Wirtz into a squad that already boasts attacking talent like Mohamed Salah, Luis Díaz, and Núñez.
Wirtz is expected to slot into Liverpool’s midfield, adding creativity and goal threat from deeper positions. His ability to play across the front line gives Slot tactical flexibility as Liverpool (2.88) aims to challenge on multiple fronts.
The deal also continues Liverpool’s recent trend of targeting Bundesliga talent, following the arrivals of Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig for €70 million in 2023.
Global Significance
Once confirmed, Wirtz becomes the third most expensive player in world soccer history. Only Neymar’s €222 million move to PSG in 2017 and Kylian Mbappé‘s €180 million transfer from Monaco to PSG sit above it.
The fee reflects the premium clubs now pay for top attacking talent, particularly players under 25 with proven pedigree in Europe’s top leagues.
For Leverkusen (6.99), the windfall provides significant resources to rebuild after losing their star asset. The club has already shown they can develop world-class talent, having previously sold Havertz, Leon Bailey, and others for substantial fees.
Liverpool fans will hope Wirtz can help deliver more silverware to Anfield as the club continues its pursuit of domestic and European glory under Slot’s management.
