Tshwane Derby: SuperSport United vs. Mamelodi Sundowns

The Soweto Derby delivered drama on Saturday. Now, all eyes turn to the Tshwane Derby on Wednesday.

Mamelodi Sundowns remain top of the Premiership after a dominant 4-0 victory over Golden Arrows. Meanwhile, SuperSport United are struggling in 11th place after a 2-1 defeat to AmaZulu – their third straight league defeat.

Head-to-Head and Recent Form

SuperSport United, under Gavin Hunt, have a proud history, winning three consecutive league titles from 2007 to 2010. However, since Hunt’s return in 2022, they have found it tough to compete with Sundowns’ financial power. Masandawana has claimed the last seven Premiership titles.

Sundowns are battling Orlando Pirates for the championship. SuperSport United needs points to stay within reach of the top eight and qualify for next season’s MTN8. The visitors have dominated recent meetings, winning three and drawing one of the last four derbies.

The odds are thus slanted in favour of Sundowns (1.64), who are odds-on to get the win. SuperSport United (5.80) are heavy underdogs, while a draw is offering 3.45.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa is a player to watch as the league’s top scorer with seven goals. Iqraam Rayners has six for the season. Meanwhile, Peter Shalulile has four and is coming off the back of an impressive performance against Golden Arrows which saw him change the game after replacing Sphelele Mkhulise as a first-half tactical substitute.

Key Team News

SuperSport United’s Siphesihle Ndlovu and Sundowns’ Sphelele Mkhulise are both one yellow card away from suspension. Sundowns might rotate their squad ahead of a crucial match against Orlando Pirates on 8 February. However, they are mostly injury-free, with Themba Zwane and Rivaldo Coetzee still sidelined. Meanwhile, Bathusi Aubaas is suspended for this fixture.

Sundowns Stars Return To Old Stomping Ground

Mamelodi Sundowns’ recent starting XI against Golden Arrows included five former SuperSport United players. Ronwen Williams, Grant Kekana and Teboho Mokoena all spent their formative years there. Meanwhile, Iqraam Rayners and Aubrey Modiba also had stints at Matsatsantsa.
