Brian Bennett’s unbeaten 64 and Blessing Muzarabani’s four-wicket burst power Zimbabwe to a famous 23-run win over Australia.
Zimbabwe produced the upset of the T20 World Cup with a commanding 23-run victory over Australia in Colombo. The 11th-ranked side outplayed the former champions in all departments at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
After posting 169-2 in their 20 overs, Zimbabwe dismantled Australia for 146 in 19.3 overs. The result leaves Group B finely poised and places Australia under mounting pressure.
Bennett Anchors Disciplined Batting Display
Zimbabwe laid the foundation with a composed and calculated batting performance. Opener Brian Bennett struck an unbeaten 64 from 56 deliveries. The 22-year-old paced his innings smartly and located the boundary seven times.
He shared an opening stand of 61 with Tadiwanashe Marumani to settle the early nerves. Thereafter, Bennett and Ryan Burl added 70 for the second wicket. That partnership set a new Zimbabwe record for the highest second-wicket stand at a T20 World Cup.
Bennett rarely resorted to reckless hitting and relied instead on placement and timing. It marked his 10th half-century in T20 internationals. By contrast, Australia struggled to find breakthroughs despite varied bowling changes.
Muzarabani Dismantles Australia’s Top Order
In reply, Australia’s chase faltered almost immediately. Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans removed the top order with incisive new-ball spells as Australia slumped to 29-4 inside the power-play.
Muzarabani delivered the decisive spell, finishing with 4-17 from his four overs. His pace and bounce exposed uncertainty among Australia’s senior batters. From there, Zimbabwe sensed an opportunity and tightened its grip on proceedings.
There were jubilant scenes in the stands as Zimbabwe supporters celebrated with traditional dance, and that energy mirrored the confidence displayed on the field.
Maxwell Resistance Ends Abruptly
Australia briefly revived hopes through Glenn Maxwell and Matt Renshaw. The pair combined for a 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket, with Maxwell counter-attacking with intent, striking 31 from 24 balls.
However, Ryan Burl’s introduction shifted momentum once more. The part-time leg-spinner induced Maxwell to drag a delivery onto his stumps. And from 106-4, Australia collapsed to 146 all out.
Renshaw lacked support as wickets fell steadily around him. Zimbabwe (100.94) maintained that pressure and held their composure in the closing overs to cause the first real upset of the tournament.
Australia Faces Mounting Concerns
Australia headed into the contest without captain Mitchell Marsh, while fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were also unavailable for selection. Those absences exposed a side still searching for rhythm and balance at this T20 World Cup.
Marcus Stoinis added further concern after injuring his left palm attempting a return catch. He did come out to bat but managed only six runs. Tim David featured after missing the Ireland match but departed for a two-ball duck.
Having opened with victory over Ireland, Australia (1.35) now faces renewed uncertainty. With Sri Lanka (3.25) and Oman still to come, qualification is no longer assured.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, strengthened their case for progression with a second spirited display. After defeating Oman in their opener, they have now toppled one of the tournament favourites.
This victory will resonate beyond Colombo. Zimbabwe demonstrated that discipline and execution can overturn a reputation on cricket’s biggest stage.
