Eight straight titles. No team in South African soccer history has dominated like this. Mamelodi Sundowns just rewrote the record books again, and they’re not finished yet.
Eighth Consecutive Crown Secured
Mamelodi Sundowns (1.31) are champions again. They sealed their eighth consecutive South African league title on Wednesday night. A commanding 3-0 win over Chippa United (3.80) did the job at Buffalo City Stadium.
The Pretoria giants needed just a point to secure the crown. Instead, they delivered a masterclass in finishing. Their total now stands at 70 points with one match left. This puts them just three shy of their own season points record.
Rayners and Sales Lead Attack
Iqraam Rayners broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. His curling effort found the top corner. The strike took his league tally to 14 goals for the season. He now shares top spot with teammate Lucas Ribeiro Costa.
Brazilian forward Arthur Sales came off the bench to great effect. He netted twice in the final twenty minutes. His first goal came from a tight angle. The second resulted from a goalkeeping error by Darren Johnson. The Chippa keeper played the ball straight to Sales for a simple finish.
Dominant Record Continues
“Our team sets the standard in South African football,” said coach Miguel Cardoso. “Eight titles in a row show our tremendous consistency.”
Sundowns have a strong historical record against Chippa. In 28 meetings since Chippa’s promotion in 2012, Sundowns have won 17 matches. Chippa have managed just two victories, with nine draws completing the tally.
Trophy Presentation and Continental Quest
The champions will lift the trophy this Sunday. The ceremony follows their final match against Magesi at Loftus Versfeld. Then all focus shifts to continental glory.
Sundowns face Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League final. The first leg takes place at home on May 24. Cairo hosts the return fixture on June 1.
Battle for Top Eight Intensifies
Chippa remain eighth in the standings on 30 points. Both Kaizer Chiefs and Marumo Gallants have the same total. The race for the final top-eight spot remains tight.
