Springboks To Kick Off 2025 Against Strong Barbarians

South Africa and Barbarians field strong teams in first-ever Cape Town clash as untested Bok newcomers meet seasoned invitational stars.

The Springboks (1.08) kick off their 2025 season on Saturday with a high-profile clash against the Barbarians at Cape Town Stadium. Head coach Rassie Erasmus has named a solid match-day squad, while the Barbarians (7.40) arrive with a star-studded lineup featuring Test centurions and global fan favourites.

With both teams fielding strong sides, the first-ever meeting between these two in South Africa promises a thrilling contest of structure versus flair.

Springboks Lineup: Springboks Blend Youth and Experience

Rassie Erasmus has selected a balanced Springbok lineup, combining World Cup veterans and rising talents, including debutants Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Vincent Tshituka, Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouche.

In the front row, veterans Malcolm Marx (hooker) and Ox Nche (loosehead prop) line up alongside rookie Ntlabakanye (tighthead), with Van der Merwe and Fouche on the bench.

The second row features the powerful pairing of Jean Kleyn and Lood de Jäger. The latter makes his long-awaited return to the international stage. In the loose trio, expect physicality and grunt from Vincent Tshituka, captain Siya Kolisi, and Jean-Luc du Preez – a dynamic as yet untested ensemble.

The combination of Morne van den Berg and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu forms a pacy and skilful halfback-axis. They are supported by an equally dynamic back three of Kurt-Lee Arendse, Cheslin Kolbe, and Aphelele Fassi.

Barbarians lineup: Test-Win Experience Meets Flair

Robbie Deans has curated a fearsome Barbarians XV that brims with experience and flair. The pack features Ireland legend Peter O’Mahony and former All Blacks captain Sam Cane in a powerful forward unit. They are complemented by explosive loose forward Shannon Frizell.

The backline showcases rugby craft with Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Mark Telea. They are experienced former All Blacks and known for game intelligence and leadership.

This invitational side thrives on unpredictability and flair. Expect quick offloads from Kerr-Barlow, dynamic ball-running from Frizell, and Cian Healy’s set-piece mastery. This can provide a stern test for the Springboks’ strategy.

Clash of Styles: Structure vs Spontaneity

The match offers a stark tactical contrast. South Africa’s focus remains on cementing set-piece platforms, defensive discipline, and phased play to prepare for the incoming mid-year Test series.

Meanwhile, the Barbarians thrive on spontaneous attack and creative flair. Their limited preparation makes them unpredictable –  expect rapid ruck-ball, offload-heavy play, and inventiveness.

This clash will be a litmus test for the Springboks’ ability to impose structure on a freewheeling, high-skill opponent. It’s a live training ground before their competitive Tests.

Momentum Builder for Springboks

This fixture inaugurates the Springboks’ 2025 season and sets the tone ahead of Tests against Italy and Georgia. Erasmus emphasises its dual role: match exposure for the fringe group and system rehearsal under real opposition.

Hosting the Barbarians on home soil amplifies the stake. Springboks players have everything to gain and little to lose against a side famed for its historical significance and rugby artistry.

What To Expect From Cape Town Spectacle

Expect a tense, entertaining opener – South Africa’s young guns will seek structure and composure. Meanwhile, the Barbarians bring chaos and creativity.

Either outcome offers valuable insight: whether the Bok system holds under pressure, and which newcomers will step up in elite company.

As Cape Town gears up, the rugby world awaits a captivating debut.
