Three Springboks feature in rugby’s top 10 earners as stars flock to France and Japan for massive salary boosts.
As rugby union continues to grow commercially, the salaries of the sport’s biggest stars have soared to eye-watering levels.
According to a new report by DashTickets.nz, which analysed the earnings and contract shifts across the global game, several familiar names are now pulling in seven-figure sums. Japan’s Rugby League One features five of the top 10 earners, highlighting its growing financial influence in the global rugby landscape.
Here’s a breakdown of the top 10 highest-paid rugby union players for the 2024/25 season.
1. Owen Farrell – £1.2 million
Topping the list is England fly-half Owen Farrell, who made a lucrative move from Saracens to Racing 92 in France. His £1.2 million salary marks a £400k increase from his previous contract, although it makes him ineligible to play for England under current selection rules.
2. Richie Mo’unga – £1.04 million
All Blacks star Richie Mo’unga has cashed in big after leaving New Zealand for Toshiba Brave Lupus in Japan. His earnings have more than tripled, jumping from £ 300k to over £1 million annually.
3. Finn Russell – £1 million
Scotland’s Finn Russell also crossed the £1 million mark following his move to Bath. His salary rose by £ 300k compared to what he earned at Racing 92 in France.
4. Cheslin Kolbe – £930k
The electric South African winger continues to command top dollar at Tokyo Sungoliath, with a salary nearing the £1 million mark.
5. Faf de Klerk – £900k
Another Springbok in Japan, Faf de Klerk, earns £ 900K at Yokohama Canon Eagles, enjoying a significant pay boost since leaving Sale Sharks.
6. Siya Kolisi – £808k
Springbok skipper Siya Kolisi took a pay cut after moving from Racing 92 to the Sharks, but still ranks among the top earners at over £800k.
7. Dan Biggar – £800k
Soon-to-retire Wales fly-half Dan Biggar saw his income rise by £200k after joining Toulon in France’s Top 14.
8. Maro Itoje – £800k
England lock Maro Itoje remains one of Saracens’ biggest assets and received a £100k raise this season.
9. Beauden Barrett – £780k
Another All Black in Japan, Beauden Barrett, earns £780k with Toyota Verblitz, continuing the trend of top players heading east.
10. Antoine Dupont – £700k
Surprisingly low on the list, Antoine Dupont, arguably the world’s best player, earns £700k with Toulouse, up £50k from last season.
