Relebohile Mofokeng Stars in Bafana Win

Union Saint-Gilloise star Relebohile Mofokeng delivered one of his finest South Africa displays with two goals. The winger helped Pitso Mosimane’s side secure a commanding 5-0 victory over Eritrea in Cairo on Wednesday night.

South Africa (1003.75) controlled the contest from the opening stages and eventually turned their dominance into a convincing victory. Relebohile Mofokeng‘s brace highlighted an impressive attacking performance as Bafana Bafana strengthened their position at the top of Group D. Mofokeng’s performance paid dividends for any online sports betting enthusiasts who may have had faith in him.

Mofokeng Opens the Scoring

Bafana Bafana dominated possession during the opening minutes of the AFCON qualifier. However, South Africa initially struggled to create a clear opening against an organised Eritrea defence. The first major chance arrived in the 12th minute when Mofokeng found space on the edge of the penalty area. His effort beat the goalkeeper but bounced back off the inside of the post, denying him an early opener. Nevertheless, the warning showed that the Union Saint-Gilloise attacker was becoming increasingly influential in the final third.

Seven minutes later, Mofokeng found the breakthrough for South Africa. Oswin Appollis slipped a precise pass into the penalty area, putting his teammate into a dangerous position. Mofokeng kept his composure before firing past Eritrea goalkeeper Yonathan Sultan to make it 1-0. The goal rewarded South Africa’s sustained pressure and gave Mosimane’s side a deserved advantage. Furthermore, it continued Mofokeng’s strong start to life in European soccer.

Mofokeng has already made an impact for Union Saint-Gilloise since completing his move from Orlando Pirates. The attacking midfielder and winger had scored four goals in nine appearances for the Belgian club before the international fixture. His latest performance showed why South Africa view him as an important part of their attacking future. At just 20 years old, Mofokeng is gaining valuable experience at both club and international level. Consequently, his development will be closely followed by Bafana supporters.

South Africa Double Their Advantage

South Africa continued controlling possession after taking the lead. Eritrea struggled to create sustained pressure as Bafana moved the ball confidently across the pitch. Ronwen Williams did have one nervous moment in the 22nd minute when the captain gave away possession. Eritrea attempted to take advantage, but the resulting shot missed the target. Apart from that moment, South Africa remained largely comfortable.

The visitors then doubled their advantage just before half-time. Samukele Kabini picked out Mofokeng on the left flank with an accurate pass. The winger moved inside and shifted the ball onto his stronger right foot before finishing past Sultan. His second goal arrived at a crucial moment and left Eritrea facing a difficult task after the interval. Moreover, Mofokeng’s movement repeatedly caused problems for the Eritrean defence.

That second strike also demonstrated the variety in Mofokeng’s attacking game, because he did not simply rely on pace or direct running to create danger. Instead, he showed patience, composure and the technical quality required to move into central areas before producing a controlled finish. Those qualities have become increasingly important as he adjusts to European soccer and competes for a regular role with Union Saint-Gilloise. South Africa therefore had plenty of reasons to be encouraged by his display.

Sithole Adds a Third Goal

South Africa started the second half with the same attacking intent. Bafana immediately looked to extend their advantage rather than sit back and protect their two-goal lead. Their pressure produced a third goal in the 52nd minute. Appollis drove towards goal from outside the penalty area, forcing Sultan into a save. Sphephelo Sithole reacted quickly to the rebound and fired the loose ball into the net.

The goal further underlined South Africa’s dominance. Eritrea struggled to cope with the pace and movement of Bafana’s attacking players. Appollis continued to play a key role after contributing to the opening goal. Mofokeng also remained involved as South Africa looked to exploit spaces behind the Eritrean defence. As a result, Mosimane’s side continued to create opportunities.

Rayners Extends Bafana’s Lead

South Africa found their fourth goal in the 63rd minute. Sithole intercepted a poor pass from Sultan before finding Appollis in space. The Orlando Pirates winger then supplied the final pass for Iqraam Rayners. The Mamelodi Sundowns striker made no mistake with the opportunity. His finish completed another well-worked South African attack.

Rayners’ goal will be particularly encouraging for Mosimane. The striker has not enjoyed consistent recent minutes at club level with Sundowns. His ability to find the net for Bafana could therefore provide the coach with another option in attack. In addition, the goal showed that South Africa can receive contributions from several areas of the team. That attacking variety could prove important during the remainder of the AFCON qualification campaign.

Williams Produces Important Saves

Despite South Africa’s dominance, Eritrea did create some dangerous moments. Williams was forced into action during the second half after Esrom Yohannes cut inside from the right. Yohannes beat Kabini before unleashing a powerful effort towards goal. Williams reacted well and tipped the shot behind for a corner.

Another opportunity arrived in the 82nd minute. Ali Sulieman tested Williams with a shot aimed towards the near post. The South African goalkeeper again responded well to keep Eritrea from finding a consolation goal. Those saves ensured that Bafana maintained their clean sheet. Therefore, the result was not only an attacking success but also a solid defensive outcome.

Luther Singh Completes the Rout

South Africa added a fifth goal late in the match. Substitute Luther Singh finished from close range after Appollis reached a long ball on the right flank. Appollis then squared the ball across the penalty area for Singh to tap home. The finish completed a comprehensive victory for Bafana.

Singh’s goal provided a fitting conclusion to a dominant evening. Appollis finished the match with another important attacking contribution. Meanwhile, Mofokeng had already established himself as the standout scorer. The final score reflected South Africa’s control for most of the contest. Eritrea simply could not match Bafana’s attacking quality.

Bafana Strengthen Group D Position

The victory strengthened South Africa’s position at the top of AFCON qualifying Group D. Bafana had already defeated Guinea 2-1 in their opening match of the campaign. Kenya, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Eritrea in their first Group D fixture. Thursday’s meeting between Guinea and Kenya will provide another important result in the qualification race.

Kenya are guaranteed a place at next year’s AFCON tournament because they are co-hosts. Tanzania and Uganda are also hosting the competition. Therefore, only one additional qualification place is available from the group for South Africa, Guinea or Eritrea. Every remaining fixture carries significant importance.

South Africa have now taken a major step towards securing that qualification place. The five-goal victory also improved the mood around Mosimane’s team after their opening win over Guinea. There were still moments of vulnerability, particularly when Eritrea managed to create chances against the defence. However, Bafana’s attacking performance provided plenty of encouragement.

Mofokeng Emerges as a Key Attacking Option

Mofokeng’s performance was arguably the biggest individual talking point from the match. The Union Saint-Gilloise winger scored twice and repeatedly threatened Eritrea’s defence. His first goal demonstrated his finishing ability inside the penalty area. The second showed his confidence when cutting inside from the left.

Appollis also played a significant role in the victory. The Orlando Pirates winger assisted Mofokeng for the opener before helping create further opportunities. His involvement in Rayners’ goal and Singh’s late strike further highlighted his importance. Together, Mofokeng and Appollis gave South Africa a dangerous attacking combination.

The pair’s performances will give Mosimane additional options as he develops his system. South Africa still have areas to improve, particularly when opponents manage to create openings. Even so, the attacking chemistry between several players is becoming increasingly promising. For Mofokeng, the brace represents another important step in his international development.

South Africa Prepare for Egypt Friendly

Bafana will remain in Cairo after the comprehensive victory over Eritrea. Their next fixture is a friendly against Egypt on Sunday, October 4. The match will give Mosimane another opportunity to assess his squad against stronger opposition. It could also provide additional minutes for players competing for starting positions.

South Africa will then turn their attention back to AFCON qualification in November. Bafana are scheduled to face Kenya in a qualifying double-header. Those matches could have a major influence on the final Group D standings. The team will therefore need to maintain the attacking momentum generated by their victory over Eritrea.

Mofokeng will enter those fixtures with renewed confidence after producing two excellent finishes in Cairo. His move to European soccer has already increased the level of competition around his development. Now, his latest South Africa performance has provided another indication of his potential importance to Bafana Bafana. For Mosimane, finding the right balance between established players and emerging talents such as Mofokeng could shape South Africa’s campaign.

The result also offers supporters plenty of encouragement ahead of the remaining qualifiers. South Africa displayed attacking efficiency while creating numerous opportunities throughout the match. Eritrea had moments of promise, but Bafana’s quality ultimately proved decisive. With the AFCON qualification race continuing, South Africa will now look to build on their impressive 5-0 victory.
