On May 25, 2025, Rafael Nadal was honoured with a heartfelt farewell ceremony at Roland Garros. Marking 20 years since his debut at the French Open. The event took place on Court Philippe-Chatrier, where Nadal secured 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles.
A Fitting Tribute to the ‘King of Clay’
The ceremony featured a packed stadium of 15,000 fans, many wearing “Merci Rafa” T-shirts, creating a mosaic that spelt out “RAFA” with hearts and “14 RG” in the stands. Rafael Nadal was joined on court by his long-time rivals and fellow members of the “Big Four”—Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. Other notable attendees included Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Carlos Moya, and Juan Carlos Ferrero.
During the tribute, a permanent plaque featuring Rafael Nadal’s footprint was unveiled next to a net post on the court. Visibly moved, Nadal expressed his gratitude in French, English, and Spanish, thanking his family, coaches, fans, and especially his uncle Toni, who mentored him throughout his career.
Reflections on a Legendary Career
Rafael Nadal, who retired in November 2024, shared his feelings about stepping away from professional tennis. He stated, “I don’t miss much tennis, because I feel that I’ve given all that I had. I arrive today with the peace that I can’t be on court. You know, my body doesn’t allow me to be on court. So that’s all. I am at peace.”
His career at Roland Garros is unparalleled, with a 112–4 match record and 14 titles. An achievement widely regarded as one of the greatest in sports history.
A Legacy Cemented
The farewell ceremony not only celebrated Rafael Nadal’s achievements but also highlighted the camaraderie and mutual respect among tennis’s greatest competitors. As Nadal transitions into retirement, his legacy as the “King of Clay” and one of the sport’s most revered figures remains firmly intact.
