Orlando Pirates vs. Marumo Gallants Nedbank Cup Preview

Orlando Pirates host Marumo Gallants in a high-stakes Nedbank Cup semi-final on Sunday, 13 April 2025. Kick-off at Orlando Stadium is scheduled for 15:00 CAT.

Both sides have momentum in the Nedbank Cup, but only one can advance. Orlando Pirates (1.30) are favourites, but Marumo Gallants (8.54) are not to be underestimated.

Pirates Chasing Silverware in a Dream Season

Orlando Pirates are chasing glory on three fronts. They are in the semi-finals of both the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League, while also in the running for the Betway Premiership title. José Riveiro’s side are in their best form since 2011/12. The Buccaneers have not lost in seven games across all competitions.

In continental competition, Pirates advanced past MC Alger with a 1-0 aggregate win. Riveiro’s tactical discipline has made them a tough side to break down. However, fatigue could be a concern given the intensity of their recent fixtures.

Gallants Showing Signs of Revival

Marumo Gallants are not to be taken lightly. They have taken seven points from their last three Betway Premiership matches. That run has moved them away from the relegation zone and into mid-table comfort. The performances of veterans like Daniel Akpeyi and Gabadinho Mhango could be key.

Mhango in particular will be eager to make an impact against his former club. He scored in Gallants’ 2-0 league win over Pirates on 1 March, which will still be fresh in both teams’ minds as they prepare for this rematch.

Pirates Face Selection Challenges

Injuries could play a part in this semi-final. Pirates have several key players sidelined. Olisa Ndah, Thabiso Monyane, Thabiso Lebitso, Thabiso Sesane and Zakhele Lepasa remain long-term absentees.

Meanwhile, Monnapule Saleng has reportedly returned to training following reports of a contractual dispute. However, he has yet to feature since his return and may not be risked. That puts pressure on the likes of Kabelo Dlamini and Relebohile Mofokeng to step up.

Despite the challenges, Pirates’ squad depth is strong. Riveiro has rotated effectively throughout the season. Players like Patrick Maswanganyi have taken leadership roles and could be pivotal again.

Gallants Banking on Experience and Recent History

Gallants may lack Pirates’ resources, but they make up for it with experience and determination. In the 2-0 win over Pirates last month, Gallants showed tactical awareness and sharp counter-attacking play.

Furthermore, Gallants’ underdog status gives them an edge in the Nedbank Cup. The pressure will be on Pirates to deliver in front of their home fans. Gallants can use that to their advantage by staying compact and frustrating their opponents.

Nedbank Cup Format and What’s at Stake

The Nedbank Cup semi-finals are single-legged ties. If scores are level after 90 minutes, the match will go to extra time. Penalties will be used only if a winner does not emerge after 120 minutes. If the match is level in regulation time, the game will be seen as a draw (4.18) for online sports betting purposes.

The Nedbank Cup final will be held on 10 May 2025, with the host city yet to be confirmed. For Gallants, reaching the final would mark a huge turnaround after a turbulent period. For Pirates, it is another chance to inch closer to a treble. This match has all the ingredients for a classic cup tie.

Key battles to watch in Nedbank Cup semi

At the back for Orlando Pirates, Tapelo Xoki will need to keep a close eye on Mhango if he starts.

In attack, much will depend on Tshegofatso Mabasa’s finishing. If Pirates can find him in dangerous areas, they will be tough to stop. On the other end, Gallants will hope that a moment of magic or a set piece can decide the tie.

With so much riding on this game, fans can expect a tense and dramatic Nedbank Cup semi-final clash. Pirates are favourites, but cup ties are rarely predictable. Both teams have reasons to believe they can reach the final.
