The Denver Nuggets have fired head coach Michael Malone and GM Calvin Booth just days before the playoffs. Assistant coach David Adelman has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Michael Malone’s Tenure:
Michael Malone took the helm of the Nuggets (23.62) in 2015, leading the team to its first-ever NBA championship in 2023. Over nearly a decade, he became the franchise’s all-time leader in coaching wins. Despite a current season record of 47-32 at the time of Malone’s departure, placing them fourth in the Western Conference. The team was on a four-game losing streak, raising concerns about their momentum heading into the postseason. They have since beaten the Sacramento Kings 124-116.
Calvin Booth’s Role:
Calvin Booth joined the Nuggets in 2017 and was promoted to general manager in 2020. He played a pivotal role in assembling the 2023 championship-winning roster around Nikola Jokić. However, reports suggest ongoing disagreements between Malone and Booth over player development strategies. Booth favoured giving younger players more playing time, while Malone relied more heavily on veterans.
Management’s Perspective:
Josh Kroenke, vice chairman of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, stated that the decision was made to enhance the team’s competitiveness for the upcoming playoffs. He expressed gratitude for Malone’s and Booth’s contributions but emphasised the necessity of the change to pursue another championship.
Interim Leadership:
David Adelman, who has been with the Nuggets as an assistant coach since 2017, steps in as interim head coach. Adelman previously served as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
This leadership change marks a significant shift for the Nuggets as they aim to regain their championship form in the postseason.
