New Orleans Saints Are the NFL’s Dark Horse

The New Orleans Saints are genuine contenders for a spot at the Super Bowl on home soil in 2025. Alvin Kamara’s form under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has given Saints fans reason for optimism.

Next year’s Super Bowl will be held in New Orleans, and although few expected it at the start of the season, it is becoming increasingly possible that the hometown team the New Orleans Saints will be there to play in front of their home fans.

The New Orleans Saints are emerging as a legitimate dark horse for the 2024-25 NFL season, and they have plenty of reasons to be considered serious contenders. Should the Saints make it to the big game, they will have the massive advantage of playing on home turf, which could be a game-changer in their quest for a first championship since 2010, which they won with Drew Brees at quarterback.

So far, their performances have matched this ambition. Current quarterback Derek Carr has been playing out of his skin and looks a cut above the player he was even a few months ago. Alvin Kamara has started the season in electric form, scoring six touchdowns in just the first two games.

Currently, the Saints are 13th-favourites as far as the odds are concerned (34.08) to win the Super Bowl and seventh-favourites to win the NFC Conference (14.58).

The Saints opened their campaign with a statement-making 47-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers, followed by an equally dominant 44-19 win against the Dallas Cowboys. Kamara’s incredible output was a key factor in these wins – particularly the win over the Cowboys, in which he became the first player in Saints franchise history to score four or more touchdowns in a game twice (having previously done so against the Minnesota Vikings in 2020). The running back’s flying start to the season has set the tone for a team that appears to be firing on all cylinders. Although they lost 15-12 to the Philadelphia Eagles, they showed even in that game that they can be competitive against the league’s best teams and there is still time for them to grow as the season progresses.

New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak deserves a lot of credit for the team’s rejuvenation. His fresh approach has reinvigorated the Saints’ offence, allowing them to maximize their strengths in both the run and passing games. Under his leadership, the team seems far more cohesive and efficient, and this balance is crucial in their success so far.

Last season, the Saints narrowly missed out on winning the NFC South, finishing with an identical 9-8 record to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but losing out on tiebreakers. That experience has left the team with a hunger to push even further this year. With improvements on both sides of the ball, the Saints are far better equipped to take the division — and more.

While the Panthers were not worthy opponents, the win over the Cowboys in particular shows that they have what it takes to go against formidable sides. The Saints will be put to the test in upcoming fixtures against the Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their next three games. If they make it through this run without losing again, then they are undoubtedly in the mix for the Super Bowl this season.

While much of the talk surrounding the Super Bowl has been over whether or not the city of New Orleans is being fairly represented in the halftime show – where hometown rapper Lil Wayne was snubbed in favour of Kendrick Lamar for the lead act role – the city might well be represented on a much larger scale in any case.

Considering the pieces the Saints have put in place, the ceiling for this team is incredibly high. If their early-season form is any indication, the Saints are poised to not just compete for, but potentially win silverware, as they eye a deep playoff run, with a Super Bowl appearance at home as the ultimate prize.
