The Nedbank Cup round of 16 will see the big three (Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates) in action. There will be other fixtures to look forward to too.
SuperSport United will host Cape Town Spurs at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in the first Nedbank Cup round of 16 clash on Wednesday evening. Stellenbosch FC will host Polokwane City at the Danie Craven Stadium on Thursday evening before the Friday clash between Durban City and TS Galaxy at Chatsworth Stadium.
On Saturday, Defending champions Orlando Pirates host Baroka FC at Orlando Stadium, while Marumo Gallants face AmaZulu FC at Dr. Molemela Stadium. In the evening, Kaizer Chiefs clash with Chippa United at FNB Stadium.
Mamelodi Sundowns take on Mpheni Home Defenders at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in a 3 pm Sunday kick-off. One round of 32 matches, between Royal AM and Milford FC, was postponed amid Royal AM’s financial issues. Therefore, Sekhukhune United do not have an opponent for their game as of now.
SuperSport United vs. Cape Town Spurs
SuperSport United (1.30) has been in poor form in the Premiership recently, but they have an experienced squad and are up against a Cape Town Spurs side sitting near the bottom of the Motsepe Foundation Championship. SuperSport United are likely to claim the win here.
Stellenbosch FC vs. Polokwane City
Stellenbosch (1.66) has been successful in cup competitions recently. They won the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup and were runners-up in the MTN8 this season. Polokwane City have punched above their weight in the league, but on home soil, Stellies are the likely winners.
Durban City vs. TS Galaxy
Durban City (3.91) are top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship. While TS Galaxy are seventh in the Premiership and in with a chance of an MTN8 spot, Durban City are on home soil for this game. This is likely to be a tight fixture and could go all the way to penalties.
Orlando Pirates vs. Baroka FC
Orlando Pirates (1.19) lost 4-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns and will be looking for an immediate response against Baroka. Baroka beat Orlando Pirates in the 2018 Telkom Knockout final in a shock result, but the gap between the clubs has since widened with José Riveiro leading Pirates into a better position. Pirates are likely to clinch the win.
Marumo Gallants vs. AmaZulu
Marumo Gallants (2.20) languish 14th in the Premiership. AmaZulu (2.79) have had inconsistent results recently but still sits sixth. Usuthu will be playing away from home, but they have the quality to come away with the win.
Kaizer Chiefs vs. Chippa United
Kaizer Chiefs (1.38) have been putting together a stronger run of form under Nasreddine Nabi. They were unlucky to lose the Soweto Derby 1-0 to Orlando Pirates after the Buccaneers were awarded a controversial penalty.
Mamelodi Sundowns vs. Mpheni Home Defenders
Sundowns (3.00) are favourites to win the Nedbank Cup according to the odds on Easybet. Masandawana were not at their best in the round of 32 and still came away with a huge 5-2 win over Sibanye Golden Stars. They should have little trouble claiming the win in another tie which is unlikely to cause them much stress. This is a golden opportunity for Miguel Cardoso to rotate his squad and give minutes to those who have not picked up as many as they would have liked amid stiff competition for places.
Big Three Lead the Charge
The Nedbank Cup round of 16 sets up some interesting battles between the big clubs and underdogs. With Pirates defending their title, Chiefs looking to bounce back, and Sundowns continuing their dominance, the traditional powerhouses are expected to advance. But as Baroka’s historic win over Pirates in 2018 showed, cup football can always spring a surprise.
