Nedbank Cup Final Preview: Kaizer Chiefs vs. Orlando Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are heading into a monumental Nedbank Cup final. This is a rare derby clash between the two giants of Soweto in the decisive match of this competition.

The Nedbank Cup final will take place in Durban. Moses Mabhida Stadium will again provide the backdrop for one of South Africa’s biggest soccer rivalries.

Nedbank Cup Kings: Orlando Pirates Favourites

Orlando Pirates (2.09) are chasing a third successive Nedbank Cup title and remain in the running for the South African Premiership crown. Their 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs (3.65) in the league on 3 May added to their recent dominance in the Soweto derby. Evidence Makgopa equalised after Makabi Lilepo’s opener before Relebohile Mofokeng sealed the win in the second half.

They followed that with another 2-1 victory, this time over Golden Arrows, which showed their ability to manage both league and cup responsibilities. Pirates’ success under José Riveiro has been underpinned by squad depth and tactical flexibility. The Buccaneers also boast a strong track record in knockout competitions.

This current form places them in a strong position to continue their hold over Chiefs. Moreover, their youthful squad, six players under the age of 23 featured in the latest derby, suggests a team building for sustained success. Riveiro will be aware, however, that form alone doesn’t guarantee victory in a Soweto derby final.

Chiefs Seek Redemption Amid Turmoil

Kaizer Chiefs have not lifted a major trophy since 2015, and their supporters are growing increasingly impatient. Their last Nedbank Cup final in 2019 ended in humiliation as they lost 1-0 to second-tier TS Galaxy at the very same Moses Mabhida Stadium. That defeat remains one of the low points in the club’s recent history.

The current league campaign has been far from ideal. Chiefs sit ninth in the South African Premiership standings with just two games remaining for Amakhosi. Despite their poor league form, Nasreddine Nabi’s men have found some rhythm in the Nedbank Cup.

Still, the stakes remain high for Nabi. Lifting the Nedbank Cup would ease pressure and signal progress under his leadership. Anything less may not be enough to earn the full backing of the demanding Amakhosi faithful.

Team Selection and Injury Concerns

Chiefs will be without Bradley Cross due to suspension following his red card in the league derby. However, Wandile Duba returns from suspension and is available for selection. The likes of Given Msimango, Reeve Frosler and Rushwin Dortley remain sidelined through injury, while Thabo Cele and Inácio Miguel’s status is uncertain.

In contrast, Pirates welcome back two important players. Nkosinathi Sibisi and Thalente Mbatha return from suspension and are expected to slot back into the starting lineup. Sibisi’s absence was felt in the previous derby, so his return is a timely boost.

Historical Context and What’s at Stake

This will be the first Nedbank Cup final between Chiefs and Pirates since 2006, a match which remains etched in the memory of South African soccer fans. Saturday’s encounter in Durban provides a chance for Chiefs to avenge that defeat and rewrite recent history.

For Pirates, the objective is clear. Adding another trophy would underline their dominance in domestic competitions and cap off a fruitful season. A double–winning both the Nedbank Cup and the South African Premiership – remains a real possibility.

On the other hand, Chiefs have much more to prove. A win would not only end their long trophy drought but also reassert their relevance in the South African soccer hierarchy. For Nabi, it may serve as a crucial turning point in his tenure.

Online sports betting fans are buzzing with anticipation ahead of this high-stakes clash. Given Pirates’ recent form and Chiefs’ hunger for silverware, the final promises to be tightly contested.

Venue and Match Details

The match will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 May. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 PM CAT. Both teams will have large support, and the atmosphere is expected to be electric.

Durban has seen its fair share of dramatic cup finals, and this one could prove to be among the most memorable. With pride, bragging rights and a major trophy on the line, everything points to an enthralling spectacle.
