Kylian Mbappé chose the perfect stage for a landmark night. He scored twice as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday.
His late win was also his 100th goal for the club. He reached the milestone in just 116 appearances. The result ended Barça’s perfect league start and blew the title race wide open.
A Lucky Opener, Then a Late Winner
The opener came with a slice of luck. In the 41st minute, Gerard Martín tried to clear the danger. Instead, his clearance struck Mbappé and fell kindly for the Frenchman. He kept his cool and beat Joan García to put Madrid ahead.
Barcelona hit back after the break. Raphinha levelled the scores in the 61st minute, and the home crowd came alive. For a while, Barça looked the more likely winners.
Then came the decisive moment. With three minutes left, Eduardo Camavinga raced down the right flank. He cut the ball back, and Mbappé tapped it into an empty net. It was a simple finish, but it carried huge weight.
That goal sealed three points and a famous away win. It also handed Barcelona their first league defeat of the season. Barça had won all nine of their opening La Liga games.
100 Goals in 116 Games
The numbers behind the milestone are remarkable. Mbappé has played 9,532 minutes for Real Madrid. That works out at a goal every 95 minutes. He averages about 0.86 goals per game.
He is only the 24th player to score 100 goals for the club. Just three Madrid legends got there in fewer matches. Ferenc Puskás holds the record, needing only 100 games. Cristiano Ronaldo took 105, while Alfredo Di Stéfano needed 112.
That is elite company. Ronaldo went on to become the club’s all-time top scorer. He finished with 450 goals in 438 matches. Mbappé still has a long way to go to match that. Yet his early pace suggests he could climb the list quickly.
Where the Goals Came From
La Liga has been Mbappé’s main hunting ground. He has scored 67 league goals for Madrid so far. The Champions League accounts for another 25. He added four in the Copa del Rey and two at the Club World Cup. One goal each came in the UEFA Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.
His first Madrid goal came in that UEFA Super Cup final against Atalanta. From there, he quickly became the team’s main scorer.
His season totals show remarkable consistency. He scored 44 goals in 2024-25 and 42 in 2025-26. This season, he already has 14 goals in 13 matches. That includes 11 in 10 La Liga games and three in the Champions League. And it is still only October.
A Cabinet Full of Personal Awards
Mbappé’s individual honours have piled up since his arrival. In his first season, he won the European Golden Shoe. He also claimed the Pichichi Trophy as La Liga’s top scorer. He won the Pichichi again in 2025-26. Last season, he also finished as the Champions League’s top scorer.
In 2025, he scored 59 goals for Madrid in a single calendar year. That tied a club record that Ronaldo had held alone.
His form for France has been just as strong. This summer, he became his country’s all-time leading scorer. He also took his World Cup tally to 22 at the 2026 tournament in North America. That made him the top scorer in World Cup history.
Still, one big prize has escaped him at Madrid. Barcelona beat them to the La Liga title in 2024-25 and 2025-26. Mbappé knows the league crown is the one that matters most.
“The Star of the Game Was the Team”
Despite his personal milestone, Mbappé played down his own role after the match. “The star of the game was the team, the group,” he said. He admitted Madrid had difficult spells but also periods of control.
He called his 100th goal “just a detail”. For him, the win and the group mattered far more. “This victory will give the group a lot of confidence,” he added.
The striker also defended the quality of the squad. “Anyone who says the quality isn’t here is a liar,” he said. However, he stressed that Madrid must work as one to win titles. He kept his feet on the ground too. “It’s a great game but it’s only three points,” he said.
What This Means for the Title Race
The win changes the shape of the La Liga table. Madrid now sit just three points behind leaders Barcelona. Before Sunday, Barça looked ready to run away with the title again. Now there is a real contest.
The timing was perfect for Mbappé too. His brace came on the eve of the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony. He is among the leading contenders for the award. A match-winning double in El Clásico will do his chances no harm.
Mbappé joined Madrid on a free transfer in June 2024. Before that, he scored 256 goals in 308 games for Paris Saint-Germain. He also netted 27 in 60 appearances for AS Monaco. At 27, he still has plenty of years left at the top.
The next milestone is already in sight. At this pace, 150 Madrid goals could arrive within two seasons. For Barcelona, the message is clear. Real Madrid and their talisman are back in the fight.
