Arsenal moved to the brink of the Champions League knockout stages after crushing Club Brugge 3-0 on Wednesday night, with Noni Madueke’s spectacular double maintaining their perfect European record this season.
The £50 million summer signing from Chelsea silenced his critics with two clinical finishes, whilst Gabriel Martinelli’s brilliant third goal extended his own Champions League scoring streak to five consecutive matches. The result leaves Arsenal six points clear of ninth-placed Liverpool with just two group fixtures remaining.
Madueke Announces Himself on European Stage
The 22-year-old winger opened the scoring after 27 minutes with a goal that left manager Mikel Arteta searching for superlatives. Collecting possession deep inside Brugge territory, Madueke surged past two defenders before unleashing a ferocious left-footed strike from 22 yards that crashed off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
“When you talk about individual quality and magic moments, that’s it,” Arteta said afterwards. “At this level, you need players who can do something different. Noni has shown he can do that.”
His second arrived barely 80 seconds after half-time. Martin Zubimendi’s cross found Madueke unmarked, and the England international headed into an empty net after hesitation in the Belgian defence left goalkeeper Tristan van den Heuvel stranded.
The brace takes Madueke’s tally to three goals in three Champions League appearances, following his opener against Bayern Munich a fortnight ago. Despite initial scepticism from sections of Arsenal’s fanbase over his move across London, the winger has quickly justified his hefty price tag.
Historic European Dominance Continues
Arsenal became just the fifth English club to win their opening six European Cup matches, joining Manchester United, Leeds United, Liverpool and Manchester City in an exclusive group. Their 100 per cent record has them sitting comfortably in the automatic qualification places with a goal difference of plus-13.
The Premier League leaders need just one point from their remaining fixtures – against Inter Milan on 20 January and Kazakhstan’s Kairat a week later – to guarantee knockout football for a third consecutive season.
Martinelli added the third on 57 minutes, cutting inside from the left flank before curling a magnificent effort into the top corner. The Brazilian became the first Arsenal player ever to score in five straight Champions League contests, surpassing Gabriel Jesus’s previous club record.
Jesus Makes Emotional Return
The night offered another significant moment when Jesus made his first appearance in 332 days, having ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in January. The Brazilian replaced Viktor Gyökeres on the hour mark and immediately showcased the sharpness that made him integral to Arsenal’s success.
He came within inches of a dream comeback goal, spinning away from two defenders before striking the post with a right-footed effort.
“For 11 months, he has been fighting against a very difficult injury,” Arteta said. “To see him back with that smile, that energy and that quality is really impressive. If he continues like this, he will bring something else to the team.”
Arsenal fielded a makeshift defence with eight first-team players unavailable, including Jurriën Timber, who travelled but wasn’t risked. Christian Norgaard operated as an emergency centre-half, yet the visitors never looked troubled after Madueke’s opener.
Competition Update
Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain were held to a goalless draw by Athletic Bilbao despite dominating possession. Goalkeeper Unai Simon produced several crucial saves to deny the French champions, who now sit third with fixtures against Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle United remaining.
Newcastle suffered late heartbreak at Bayer Leverkusen, conceding an 88th-minute equaliser after leading 2-1. The Magpies sit 12th on 10 points with difficult fixtures against PSV Eindhoven and PSG still to come.
Arsenal’s relentless European campaign continues to gather momentum. With Madueke finding his rhythm and Jesus returning to fitness, Arteta’s squad depth is strengthening at precisely the right moment.
