Real Madrid (2.20) have confirmed the signing of France centre-back Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool on a four-year contract.

Real Madrid announced Konate’s signing on Thursday. The 27-year-old put pen to paper on a deal running until June 30, 2030. He left Liverpool (6.00) after contract talks at Anfield broke down over wages and valuation. The club confirmed his departure at the end of May.
Konate had expressed sadness at missing a proper farewell to the Liverpool supporters: “At that moment, I didn’t know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you,” he said.
Real Madrid moved quickly once he became available. The deal was agreed without a transfer fee involved.
Five Years At Anfield
Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig (15.14) in 2021 for £35 million. He made 183 appearances for the Merseyside club across all competitions. His trophy haul included the Premier League title in 2025, the FA Cup in 2022, and two League Cups.
Last season alone, he featured 51 times for the club. He formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Virgil van Dijk. However, the gap between player and club over his worth ultimately proved too wide to bridge. Liverpool confirmed his departure without naming a replacement. Real Madrid were waiting.
Mourinho’s Rebuild Takes Shape
Konate becomes the third high-profile signing of Real Madrid’s transfer window under Jose Mourinho. Marc Cucurella arrived from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £52 million. Bernardo Silva joined on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City. Real Madrid had gone two consecutive seasons without a major trophy.
Florentino Perez, recently re-elected as club president, tasked Mourinho with restoring Los Blancos to the top of Spain and Europe. Antonio Rudiger’s contract was also extended until 2027 following the departures of Dani Carvajal and David Alaba.

Konate will find familiar company in the Spanish capital. He played alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold 93 times in Liverpool’s defence. Alexander-Arnold completed his own move to Real Madrid earlier this year. Konate will also link up with compatriots Kylian Mbappe and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Real Madrid are currently in advanced talks to sign Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan. Reports also link the club to Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. Konate is currently in the United States with France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was an unused substitute in Les Bleus’ 3-1 opening victory over Senegal.
