Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been named the 2024 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. His standout debut season not only turned heads but also signalled a new era for the franchise.
Record-Breaking Rookie Season
Selected second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Daniels quickly secured the starting quarterback position during training camp. He led the Commanders to a 7-2 start, highlighted by a thrilling Hail Mary victory over the Chicago Bears in Week 8. Throughout the season, Daniels demonstrated exceptional dual-threat capabilities, completing 69% of his passes for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 100.1. On the ground, he amassed 891 rushing yards and six touchdowns, setting a new rookie quarterback rushing record previously held by Robert Griffin III.
Commanding a Franchise Turnaround
Daniels’ leadership and performance were pivotal in transforming the Commanders’ fortunes. He guided the team to a postseason berth and an upset road victory over the Detroit Lions, bringing Washington within one win of a Super Bowl appearance. His poise and playmaking abilities have established him as a cornerstone for the franchise’s future.
Unanimous Recognition
Daniels received 49 out of 50 first-place votes for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, totaling 495 points. He outpaced other notable rookies, including Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers (214 points) and Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix (153 points).
