LeBron James and his son, LeBron “Bronny” James Jr. are the first father-son duo in the NBA. Naturally, this increases the pressure on the Los Angeles Lakers’ recent draft pick, but is he ready to hold his own?
It is unclear what role Bronny James will play for the Los Angeles Lakers (30.89) this season in the National Basketball Association (NBA). However, what is clear is that his family has good cause to be immensely proud of him.
He is not quite at the level his dad is. However, an analysis of his skillset shows that he is a capable guard who can contribute in the long term.
Skill Development
Bronny James has developed a well-rounded skill set, including shooting, ball handling, and basketball IQ. He has demonstrated the ability to play both guard positions, which adds versatility to his game.
Competition Level
He has faced high-level competition throughout his high school career and in his lone season at the University of Southern California (USC). His performances against elite players have helped him grow and adapt to the demands of higher-level basketball.
Physical Development
As he continues to grow and develop physically, his athleticism and strength will be crucial. He has been noted for his work ethic in the gym, which will be vital for him to compete at the professional level.
Cardiac arrest
One concerning event was the cardiac arrest Bronny James suffered in July 2023 while training at USC. It was revealed that a congenital heart defect was the underlying cause. Concerns may persist regarding his health. However, the way he bounced back from the cardiac arrest to play for USC and get drafted showed a strong mentality.
Would Bronny James have been drafted if not for his father?
It is likely that LeBron James Sr.’s profile and the fact that what he wanted with his son, played a major role in Bronny James being drafted 55th by the LA Lakers. However, this does not necessarily mean that his son does not deserve an NBA spot.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported that the Golden State Warriors considered drafting Bronny James. They apparently ultimately opted against it in order to respect LeBron James’ wish to play with his son. It is possible that the Warriors’ interest may have in part been prompted by their desire to land LeBron James Sr. However, the fact that a franchise outside the Lakers considered taking a gamble on Bronny James is proof that he is a capable basketball player.
Had that not been the case, no National Basketball Association team would have gone near him. He may be fortunate to have the father he does, but he has made the most of his luck.
