How Many South Africans Have Played in the NFL?

South Africans have made their mark across global sports, and the NFL is no exception. From pioneers like Gary Anderson to rising stars like Dieter Eiselen, these athletes have brought their talents to American football’s biggest stage.

There have been four South African-born players in the NFL. Other South Africans have been in proximity to the league without playing. For instance, Paschal Ekeji is in the NFL International Player Pathway (IPP) program and Naas Botha tried out for the league.

Punters are preparing for the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl, with Easybet bringing you the latest odds, but first – let’s look back on some of the South Africans who have made it to the NFL:

Gary Anderson: A Legendary Kicker

Gary Anderson, born in Parys, Free State, South Africa, is one of the greatest kickers in NFL history. Over a 23-year career, he played for teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings. He became the first South African in the league.

Known for his accuracy and consistency, Anderson made history in 1998 with the Vikings by achieving a perfect regular season. He converted all 35 field goal attempts and 59 extra points. Though his rare miss in the NFC Championship Game overshadowed the season, his career stats speak volumes—2,434 points, four Pro Bowl selections, and All-Decade Team honours for both the 1980s and 1990s.

Anderson redefined the role of the kicker, earning a place as one of the NFL’s all-time greats for South Africans in American football.

Jerome Pathon: A Reliable Receiver

Jerome Pathon, born in Cape Town, South Africa, built a successful NFL career as a dependable wide receiver. He played for the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, and Seattle Seahawks. He consistently showcased his versatility and delivery in crucial moments.

Pathon made history with the Saints in 2003 during the iconic “River City Relay.” He caught a lateral and scored a dramatic touchdown, nearly pulling off a miraculous win. As a slot receiver, he thrived in short-yardage situations and brought consistency to every team he represented.

Pathon’s adaptability, relentless work ethic, and South African roots defined his career, cementing his place as a standout player both on and off the field.

Dieter Eiselen: From Paul Roos to the Bears

Dieter Eiselen, a South African NFL talent, has carved out a remarkable journey from Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch to the biggest stage in American football. He began his professional career with the Chicago Bears. Then went on to teams like the Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Eiselen’s path reflects his unwavering dedication and resilience.

Known for his physicality and refined technique, Eiselen has earned respect as a reliable offensive lineman. His role is crucial in protecting quarterbacks and creating opportunities for the offence to thrive. Eiselen’s success continues to inspire, as he proudly represents South Africa in the NFL, proving that hard work and determination can break barriers.

Greg Joseph: A Dependable Kicker

Greg Joseph, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, has established himself as a dependable NFL placekicker. After moving to Florida during his youth, he honed his skills at American Heritage School in Delray Beach and later at Florida Atlantic University. Joseph began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2018 and has since played for multiple teams, including the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, and Minnesota Vikings. As of January 2025, he is with the New York Jets.

Known for his consistency in high-pressure situations, Joseph boasts a career field goal percentage of 82.1%, with his longest successful kick being 61 yards. His journey from Johannesburg to the NFL serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes in South Africa, exemplifying dedication and perseverance.

Naas Botha: A Notable Attempt

Naas Botha, a legendary South African rugby flyhalf, ventured into uncharted territory in the 1980s by trying out for the Dallas Cowboys. Known for his extraordinary kicking accuracy and game management on the rugby field. He sought to translate his skills to American football as a placekicker.

Although he never played in an official NFL game, his attempt marked a connection between South African rugby and American football. Botha’s tryout remains a fascinating chapter in his illustrious career, highlighting his willingness to challenge himself and expand the reach of South African sport on the global stage.
