Mamelodi Sundowns have changed the norms about what is needed to win the South African Premiership (PSL). In order to win the league, more points are needed than in the previous years.
In the 2023-24 season, the Sundowns have set the point record for a 30-game South African Premiership season with 73. It was their seventh straight top-flight title. Over the years, the PSL has seen teams amass 75 points in a 34-game season but never 73 since it turned into a 30-game season. It is little surprise that Sundowns (1.08) are favourites to win the Premiership on Easybet again despite a tough start to the season in terms of improved competition.
How the Sundowns Changed the Game
When Sundowns won the league title in 2017-18, reclaiming it from Bidvest Wits, they did so with 60 points. At the time, that was all that was needed to win the Premiership. However, they have made it significantly more difficult since then.
Sundowns have invested heavily in strengthening their squad, often buying the best players of their rivals. One clear example was the signing of Thembinkosi Lorch from Orlando Pirates.
As a result, they have monopolised the Premiership and set new records. In 2024-25, they are currently second in the table but it has taken a monumentally impressive start from Orlando Pirates to pip them, with the Buccaneers winning seven from seven games. Sundowns have six wins from seven games and have 18 points while Pirates have 21.
Points Needed to Win the PSL This Season?
In the past, it only took 60 points to beat Sundowns to the Premiership title. However, this season will demand levels of consistency that were not seen in previous PSL seasons. The Sundowns have raised the bar and as a result, the Orlando Pirates appear to be responding to the challenge.
If the Buccaneers manage to get 75 points, it is likely they will go all the way and win the title. With anything less than that, it will still very much be up for grabs. The Sundowns took South African soccer to new heights. The goal for Jose Riveiro’s Buccaneers is to make the team from Tshwane a victim of their own success by adapting to the new normal in the PSL.
