The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is in a good place overall right now, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in a thrilling title race. Top teams are performing at a higher level than before.
The PSL’s quality has improved at the top. However, the league must address issues at the bottom to sustain long-term growth. Better management across all teams will benefit South African soccer as a whole.
Mamelodi Sundowns (1.14) and Orlando Pirates (5.44) have set the standard in the South African Premiership. Now, while fans and soccer betting followers enjoy the title race, it is time for other teams to figure out how to follow in Sundowns and Pirates’ footsteps.
The Top Clubs Have Raised Standards
Hugo Broos, South Africa’s national team coach, has praised the PSL’s improvement when talking to Canal Plus. He has pointed to the success of clubs such as Sundowns even despite his disagreements with their coaching staff.
Sundowns dominated the 2023-24 season, winning the league with a record 73 points. They continue to impress in 2024-25, maintaining a high points tally. Pirates have also improved, keeping pace with their rivals at the top.
The Gap Between Teams Has Grown
While the top clubs have improved, the same cannot be said for all teams. The gap between the best and the worst has widened. Some teams struggle to keep up, leading to off-field problems.
Chippa United and Royal AM are prime examples. Both clubs have faced financial instability and management issues. Their struggles highlight the need for better governance across the Premier Soccer League.
Future Challenges for the PSL
The league must ensure struggling clubs operate more efficiently. Poor financial management hurts the PSL’s reputation. It also affects the overall competitiveness of the league.
Sundowns and Pirates have shown that investment and planning lead to success. Other teams must follow their example to make the league stronger. If bottom clubs improve, the PSL will continue its upward trajectory.
