GOG (1.29) beat Hungarian side Pick Szeged 36-34 in a dramatic Champions League contest on Wednesday. The result revived their hopes of progressing following a heavy opening defeat last week.
Redemption After A Difficult Start
GOG suffered a crushing 10-goal defeat to Sporting CP in their opening fixture. That result left the Danish side needing an immediate response in Svendborg. The new Champions League format leaves considerably less room for error than previously.
GOG therefore approached Wednesday’s fixture knowing its importance to their campaign. They now sit on two points, level with Pick Szeged (3.70) in the group. Sporting lead the four-team group with four points after beating Kristianstad 37-29.
An Evenly Matched First Half
The opening period produced a genuinely competitive contest between the two sides. Both teams traded the lead repeatedly throughout the first thirty minutes. GOG eventually edged ahead just before the halftime whistle sounded.
That gave the hosts an 18-17 advantage heading into the break. Neither side could establish any meaningful separation during that opening period. The pace throughout remained blistering from the first whistle.
A Test Of Energy Management
The second half became largely a question of managing energy levels. GOG quickly opened a three or four-goal advantage after the restart. Pick Szeged, though, refused to let the contest slip away entirely.
The Hungarians maintained constant pressure despite falling behind on the scoreboard. GOG’s lead eventually evaporated completely with just five minutes remaining. That left the contest genuinely balanced heading into the closing stages.
A Decisive Finish
Pick Szeged appeared to hold the advantage during those final minutes. GOG, though, produced a beautiful attacking move finished by winger Lucas Pellas. That score restored the hosts’ advantage at a crucial moment. A botched attack from the visitors immediately afterward effectively sealed the outcome.
Faroese player Oli Mittun produced several moments of brilliance throughout the contest. He finished as joint-top scorer with ten goals on the night. Swiss player Manuel Zehnder matched that tally with ten goals of his own. The result keeps GOG firmly in contention within a tightly balanced group.
