Formula 1 confirms a 24-race calendar for 2027, with Portugal and Turkey returning and Bahrain hosting the opener.
Formula 1 and the FIA have confirmed the 2027 championship calendar this week. The schedule features 24 races across 22 countries, with Bahrain returning as the season opener.
Bahrain Opens A 10-Month Season
Pre-season testing takes place in Bahrain from 24 to27 February. The championship then begins at the Sakhir circuit on 14 March. Saudi Arabia follows a week later as the second round of the season.
Australia reverts to round three, forming a triple-header with Japan and China. Miami stands alone in early May before Canada and Monaco follow. The season concludes in Abu Dhabi on December 12th, later than this year’s finale.
Two Returning Venues
Portugal returns to the calendar for the first time since 2021. The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve at Portimao hosted races during the pandemic years. The circuit offers dramatic elevation changes across a technically demanding 4.6-kilometre layout. Portugal signed a two-year agreement to host the race.
Turkey also returns, with Istanbul Park hosting a race in early October. That venue last staged Formula 1 in 2021, when Lewis Hamilton secured his seventh title there. Turkey signed a five-year deal running through the 2031 season. The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort drops off the calendar entirely.
Spain’s Rotational Arrangement
Barcelona moves into a rotational deal alongside Spa-Francorchamps going forward. That arrangement sees Spain hosting in even-numbered years from 2028. Belgium will host in odd-numbered years beginning in 2027.
Madrid’s Madring circuit hosts the Spanish Grand Prix in September next year. That race forms a double-header with Monza following the summer break. Next year’s summer break also extends to five weeks rather than the usual four.
Reaction From The Sport’s Leadership
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali welcomed the expanded and varied schedule: “The 2027 calendar brings together some of the most iconic circuits and vibrant cities in the world,” he said.
He described the additions of Portugal and Turkey as particularly exciting developments: “Formula 1 continues to go from strength-to-strength, attracting new audiences around the globe,” he added.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem echoed those sentiments in his own statement: “The 2027 calendar is a strong reflection of the global appeal and continued growth of our sport,” Ben Sulayem said.
He praised the balance between tradition, innovation and fan engagement across the schedule. Organizers also built the calendar with sustainability considerations, grouping races geographically for efficiency. Las Vegas will host the only Saturday race of the 2027 season.
