Everton Clinch Away Win at Newcastle

Everton secured their first away league victory of the season with a deserved win over Newcastle United. Thierno Barry scored the decisive goal as David Moyes’ side claimed three valuable points.

Newcastle (3.30) endured another disappointing evening at St James’ Park, suffering consecutive defeats against the Toffees within four days. Meanwhile, Matthias Jaissle’s team faced further criticism after a disjointed performance and Jacob Ramsey’s late dismissal.

Barry Punishes Newcastle’s Defensive Errors

Everton deservedly claimed all three points after producing a disciplined performance against an underwhelming Newcastle side. Barry scored the only goal in the 49th minute to secure a 1-0 victory. The result followed Everton’s 3-1 Carabao Cup fourth-round triumph over the Magpies on Merseyside. Consequently, Newcastle have now lost four of their last five matches across all competitions. Their supporters made their frustrations clear by booing the players at half-time and full-time.

The decisive moment arrived shortly after the interval following a quick free-kick from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. His delivery released Tyrique George, who subsequently attempted a shot towards goal. However, Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek failed to deal with the effort, allowing the ball to squirm underneath him. Barry reacted quickest and tapped into an unguarded net.

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle questioned the circumstances surrounding the goal, as per Sky Sports. He believed Barry had committed an infringement against Fabian Schar during the build-up. According to the Magpies boss, the forward’s stray elbow should have resulted in the goal being disallowed. However, the decision stood, leaving Newcastle with another significant problem to overcome. Everton subsequently defended their advantage and frustrated the home supporters.

Newcastle Struggle to Create Clear Chances

Newcastle’s attacking problems were evident throughout a disappointing first half. Everton, meanwhile, created several promising opportunities before the break. Barry wasted a particularly good chance, while Harrison Armstrong also failed to capitalise on an opening.

Anthony Elanga came closest to restoring parity for Newcastle after the break. The winger struck the post in the 66th minute, giving the home supporters a brief reason for optimism. However, Newcastle struggled to build momentum following that opportunity. Their first shot on target arrived only in the 85th minute. Substitute Yoane Wissa tested former Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who produced an important save. Five minutes later, Wissa threatened again and forced another good intervention from the Everton goalkeeper.

Everton’s defensive organisation ultimately proved too much for Newcastle. The visitors remained disciplined despite increasing pressure during the closing stages. Pickford also demonstrated his importance with several interventions. Furthermore, Newcastle’s frustration boiled over during stoppage time. Ramsey received two yellow cards within just 86 seconds. His dismissal in the 98th minute left the hosts with little opportunity to mount a late comeback.

Moyes Celebrates Important Everton Victory

The result represented a significant milestone for Everton under David Moyes. The Toffees had been searching for their first away league victory of the season. Their previous success at St James’ Park came in February. Now, another win at the same stadium has strengthened their position in the Premier League standings. Everton moved up to seventh place following the result, while Newcastle dropped to 13th.

Moyes was delighted with his players’ commitment and work rate. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, the Everton manager praised their continued efforts. He also highlighted the importance of creating more attacking opportunities. The Toffees have shown encouraging signs in that department, although their finishing remains an area for improvement. Barry, in particular, has experienced several opportunities without consistently finding the net. However, his decisive contribution against Newcastle demonstrated his potential importance.

“I’m incredibly proud of the team all the time because their effort and their commitment are unquestionable,” he said.

“The way they go about their work is terrific. There’s not a lot of them, but they are doing a great job at the moment.

“We’re creating chances. That’s the big thing for me. We want to be a side that creates more chances. If we could be more offensive, that’s the way I’d like it to be. Thierno’s had some big opportunities, and we need him to finish. He was on the spot today.

“I don’t think anybody enjoys playing the same team twice so quickly. For us, winning in the League Cup and then coming to win in the league is hugely important. The points are important. We want to get back and nearer the top end of the league. It’s incredibly tight.”

Jaissle Accepts Responsibility for Newcastle Defeat

Newcastle’s defeat increased the pressure on Jaissle, whose team continues to search for consistency. The manager acknowledged that supporters had legitimate reasons to express their disappointment. He also accepted responsibility for the team’s latest performance. Furthermore, Jaissle admitted that his players needed to improve several aspects of their game. His comments suggested that confidence has become a growing concern within the squad.

“After a performance like that, I can understand that. That’s a reality, and I am responsible for that,” he said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“We need to work again and again on the things we need to improve. After today, that’s a lot.”

Jaissle was particularly disappointed by the difference between his team’s preparations and their performance. He claimed that Newcastle had looked committed during training sessions. However, those positive signs failed to translate into an effective display against Everton. The manager also criticised his players’ approach when attempting to retain possession. Too many long balls prevented Newcastle from establishing control and building attacks effectively.

“We had a different approach. It looked so good during the week; I have to say the lads were committed to what we were doing, and today we can just look back and wonder why we couldn’t bring it on the pitch. If you can’t deliver when it counts, you don’t deserve to win.

“We were not brave enough in possession. Too many long balls.

“It feels at the moment that there’s not too much confidence. Not only with the young lads, but also with the more experienced ones. We have to overcome that as a unit. It is expected when you are in transition. Only together can we come out of it.”

Ultimately, Newcastle must respond quickly to prevent their disappointing run from becoming more damaging. Jaissle faces questions about his team’s tactical approach and confidence. Meanwhile, Everton can approach their next fixtures with renewed belief. Moyes will hope his players maintain their attacking improvements and defensive discipline. For supporters following the Premier League through online sports betting, Everton’s rise and Newcastle’s struggles provide an interesting talking point. However, the immediate priority for both clubs remains improving their league positions.
