Crystal Palace produced a commanding 3-0 victory at Anfield to knock Liverpool out of the Carabao Cup and advance to the quarter-finals, extending the Reds’ nightmare run to six defeats in their last seven matches.
Oliver Glasner’s side capitalised on a heavily rotated Liverpool team, with Ismaila Sarr scoring twice in four devastating first-half minutes before Yeremy Pino sealed the win with a late third.
The defeat marks Liverpool’s third consecutive loss to Palace across all competitions and continues a dismal spell for the Premier League champions, who have now suffered six losses in seven games.
Slot’s Rotation Gamble Backfires
Arne Slot made 10 changes from the side beaten 3-2 at Brentford at the weekend, naming three teenagers in his starting XI and five more among the substitutes. The Liverpool boss even handed a debut to 16-year-old academy prospect Trey Nyoni.
But the wholesale changes proved costly. With no outfield substitute older than 21 and key players including Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo all absent, Liverpool looked disjointed and vulnerable.
“It’s always a blow to lose a game of football, especially if it leads to going out of a competition,” Slot admitted. “There are many reasons, maybe why we’ve lost six out of seven. None of them is good enough to accept losing so many.”
Sarr Double Sinks Liverpool
The match turned in four minutes before half-time. England defender Joe Gomez made a costly error that allowed Sarr to open the scoring. The Senegal international struck again moments later after being given far too much space to collect Pino’s pass and finish clinically.
Federico Chiesa, who scored in Liverpool’s defeat to Newcastle in last season’s final in March, had two decent chances to get his side back in the contest. He fired one attempt over the bar and saw another saved by Walter Benitez.
Liverpool’s misery deepened in the 79th minute when 18-year-old defender Amara Nallo received a straight red card for hauling down Justin Devenny, who was racing through on goal. Pino then added a third with a low, curled finish to complete a convincing victory for the Eagles.
“Not Good Enough”, But Pressure Unchanged
Despite the alarming run of form, Slot insisted the defeat to Palace had not increased the pressure on his struggling side.
“If you’re on a run of results like this, if you play for Liverpool, if you manage Liverpool, you know the pressure is there,” he said. “And I don’t think it has changed much after this loss.”
The Liverpool manager took encouragement from the Anfield crowd’s support, even at 2-0 down. “The fans were behind the team, were supporting us, and that gives me the feeling that Saturday, when our players show how much it means to them, our fans will be incredibly supportive.”
Liverpool could receive a boost ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa, with Ryan Gravenberch in contention to return from injury. “I think Ryan has a good chance,” Slot confirmed.
However, Alexander Isak remains doubtful after being forced off with a groin problem against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on 22 October.
Tough Run Ahead
Wednesday’s defeat represents a tame exit from a competition Liverpool had won twice in the past four seasons. The Reds now face a daunting fixture list that will test their resolve.
After hosting Villa on Saturday, they welcome Real Madrid to Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday before travelling to Manchester City on 9 November.
Palace, meanwhile, will face Arsenal in the quarter-final during the week commencing 15 December as they look to continue their impressive run under Glasner.
