The Dallas Cowboys have finalised a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers to acquire wide receiver George Pickens. In exchange, the Cowboys will send a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Steelers. Additionally, Dallas receives a 2027 sixth-round pick as part of the deal.
Performance and Role in Pittsburgh
Pickens, 24, is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He was selected by Pittsburgh in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft (52nd overall) after playing college football at Georgia.
During his three seasons with the Steelers, Pickens consistently contributed to the offence. In the 2024 season, he recorded 58 receptions for 900 yards and three touchdowns over 13 games. His career-high came in 2023 with 1,140 receiving yards.
Despite his on-field production, George Pickens’ tenure in Pittsburgh included some challenges. He faced criticism for on-field discipline issues, such as receiving unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and arriving late to a game.
Strategic Fit in Dallas
For the Cowboys, acquiring Pickens addresses the need for a strong No. 2 wide receiver to complement CeeDee Lamb. Since Amari Cooper’s departure in 2021, Dallas has sought a reliable secondary option in the passing game. Pickens’ addition is expected to bolster the receiving corps and provide quarterback Dak Prescott with another target
This move follows the Cowboys’ acquisition of Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers in November, indicating a continued effort to enhance their offensive weapons.
Steelers’ Perspective and Future Plans
The decision to trade George Pickens suggests a shift in strategy for the Steelers. Earlier in the offseason, General Manager Omar Khan expressed interest in extending Pickens’ contract, highlighting a “really solid” exit meeting and mutual desire for continued collaboration.
However, the team’s acquisition and extension of veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf in March may have influenced the decision to part ways with Pickens. The Steelers appear to be reconfiguring their roster, potentially to accommodate new quarterback options, including free agent Aaron Rodgers and draft pick Will Howard.
