Chile Qualify for 2027 Rugby World Cup, Samoa’s Qualification Hopes Dwindle

Chile punched their ticket to the Rugby World Cup 2027, while Samoa now face a do-or-die qualification route in Dubai.

Chile booked their spot in the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup after defeating Samoa in the South America/Pacific play‑off second leg.

After a 32‑32 draw in Utah, Los Cóndores dominated the match in Viña del Mar to win on aggregate. That result makes Chile the 23rd team to qualify for the expanded 24‑team tournament in Australia.

Meanwhile, Samoa must now rely on the Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai to claim the final ticket.

Chile Prove Rugby’s Minnows Can Perform Under Pressure

Chile’s home victory followed an error‑filled draw in the first leg, where they let a big lead slip. In Viña del Mar, Los Cóndores (2299.67) converted chances and punished Samoa’s defensive lapses to build an insurmountable lead.

Key moments came from their forwards and backline linking cleanly, especially finishing tries by their wingers. Chile now confirm back‑to‑back World Cup appearances after debuting in 2023, showing growth and consistency.

Samoa’s Qualification Path Now Narrow But Not Over

Samoa (419.20), present at every Men’s Rugby World Cup since 1991, now faces the Repechage route. They join Belgium, Namibia, and the winner of Brazil vs Paraguay in the Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai from 8‑18 November 2025.

Samoa must win against strong opposition under a tournament format where only the top side qualifies. Recent form showed fight, especially coming from behind in the first leg, but errors cost them in key moments.

What Chile’s Qualification Means For America’s Rugby

Chile’s qualification feels fully deserved, and it boosts the number of Americas teams at RWC 2027 to five: Argentina (26.24), USA (2205.71), Canada (2247.50), Uruguay (967.68), Chile (2299.67). It marks the first time that many teams from South and North America will appear in a single World Cup.

Chile’s rise continues under coach Pablo Lemoine, whose leadership helped them bounce back from setbacks. The team has improved its depth and match temperament, proving capable of closing tight qualification battles.
