Arsenal host Lille for the first time in their history, with Davide Ancelotti’s counter-attacking side looking to frustrate them.
Arsenal (1.19) host Lille (15.00) at the Emirates on Tuesday in their first-ever meeting with the French club. Mikel Arteta’s side has not dropped points in the Champions League group stage for almost two years.
Lille’s Counter-Attacking Blueprint
Ancelotti has used a 4-2-3-1 in every game since he took charge. His side shows little interest in long spells of possession. Lille drop into a 4-5-1 without the ball to clog the central lanes. They press far less than most Ligue 1 teams and have registered the fewest press sequences this season.
They also lead the league for clearances, which shows how comfortable they feel defending their own box. Goalkeeper Berke Ozer has faced 80 shots in five league matches. He has conceded 5.14 fewer goals than the expected goals total suggests.
Ancelotti praised Arsenal’s stability and consistency before the game: “Everyone has played Arsenal differently, each trying to stay true to their own identity,” he said. “We have ours too, and we’ll do our best,” he added.
Arsenal Rotate Through Injuries
Arteta lost Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi to ankle injuries suffered in a post-match training session. Christos Tzolis and William Saliba remain out with hamstring and back problems. Riccardo Calafiori should keep his place at left-back after scoring against Leeds.
Bruno Guimaraes scored the winner off the bench in that match and may start. Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres also come into consideration for the attack. Arsenal have conceded six goals in their last three games across all competitions.
They allowed only one in their first six matches. Arteta insists his players must earn every result: “We have to earn the right to get in that position again,” he said. He called Lille “very, very well coached” and praised what Ancelotti has done.
Lille’s Weak Points
Lille have no clean sheet in their last 12 Champions League away games. They have lost each of their last seven matches against English clubs, and six of those defeats came by one goal. Their defence also struggles at dead balls.
Real Betis (2.06) scored twice from five set-piece shots in the 3-2 opening defeat. Few Ligue 1 clubs have faced more shots from set plays. Arsenal rank among the best set-piece teams in Europe, so that area could decide the match.
Lille’s injury list also hurts them badly. Ethan Mbappe is suspended for three matches and also has an ankle injury. Tiago Santos tore his ACL at the weekend, and Hamza Igamane remains out with a similar injury. Romain Perraud has travelled with a knock, while Nathan Ngoy should return in defence.
Key Numbers And Prediction
Arsenal have lost only one of their last 25 home matches in major European competition. They beat Napoli 1-0 last month with 4.05 expected goals, their highest total in a Champions League game. They have kept clean sheets in 63% of their Champions League matches over the last two seasons.
Kai Havertz has scored seven goals in his last 11 appearances in the competition. Olivier Giroud, 40, could face his former club after scoring 105 goals for Lille. Ayase Ueda is expected to start ahead of him after scoring three goals in four matches.
German referee Felix Zwayer takes charge of the match. Opta gives Arsenal a 71% chance of victory and Lille 11.4%. Expect Lille to defend deep and hit on the break, but Arsenal’s depth should win out.
Prediction: Arsenal 2-0 Lille.
