Brewers Make MLB History In Dominant Game 3 Win Over The Rays

Milwaukee scored eight runs in the fifth inning of a 10-1 win and moved one victory away from a World Series sweep.

The Milwaukee Brewers (1.97) beat the Tampa Bay Rays (2.14) 10-1 in Game 3 of the World Series on Monday to take a 3-0 lead. They are one win from the first World Series sweep in 14 years and the first title in franchise history.

A Historic Fifth Inning

The game stayed quiet until the Brewers struck in the third inning. Jackson Chourio singled, and Christian Yelich and William Contreras added RBI singles. That gave Milwaukee a 2-0 lead against Freddy Peralta, their former ace.

The fifth inning then turned the game. Chourio singled, stole second, and Yelich walked. Contreras reached on a fielder’s choice that was overturned on review, and the bases were loaded. Brice Turang then hit a two-run single with two strikes and two outs. Garrett Mitchell added an RBI single.

Cooper Pratt hit a two-run double, Sal Frelick doubled, and David Hamilton singled. Chourio doubled for his fourth hit. The eight runs were the most ever scored with two outs in a World Series inning. Milwaukee also became the first team to have seven straight batters record a hit.

Gasser Shines On The Mound

Robert Gasser pitched six innings and gave up just one hit and one walk. He faced the minimum number of batters through six innings. He became the first left-hander to do that in a World Series since Sandy Koufax in 1965.

He also joined Don Larsen, who threw a perfect game in 1956, as the only pitchers to finish a six-inning outing facing the minimum. Antonio Senzatela pitched two scoreless innings. Brandon Woodruff then made his first postseason appearance, in the same ballpark where he made his debut. He gave up the Rays’ only run.

Chourio Writes His Own Record

Chourio had four hits and a stolen base in Game 3. At 22 years and 229 days, he is the second-youngest player to do that in a World Series game, behind Ty Cobb in 1908. He has eight hits in the first three games, one shy of Billy Hatcher’s record from 1990.

He also has 29 postseason hits before turning 23. Andruw Jones holds the record with 30. Chourio did it in 23 games to Jones’s 45. He is also the first player in World Series history to record two hits and a steal in one inning.

What Next In This Series

No team has ever come back from 0-3 to win the World Series. Only four teams have won a Game 4 to stay alive. No team down 0-3 has forced a Game 6. The Rays host Game 4 on Tuesday.

Milwaukee fans have also set a record. The Brewers have sold more postseason merchandise than any team in MLB history, according to league officials. They beat the previous record, set by the 2022 Phillies, by about 5%.

Milwaukee last reached the World Series in 1982 and lost to the Cardinals in seven games. This time, the city is one win away from a championship.
