Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2024: A Race of Surprises and Strategic Brilliance

The 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku did not disappoint, offering fans a thrilling display of speed, strategy, and high drama across all three phases of the weekend: practice, qualifying, and the main race. From Ferrari’s dominance in qualifying to the late-race chaos on the streets of Baku, every moment kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Practice Sessions

The practice sessions leading up to the race were filled with unpredictability. George Russell of Mercedes topped the time sheets during the final practice, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also impressed, despite a tricky FP3 session where a crash threatened his rhythm. Max Verstappen struggled with balance issues, and Lando Norris faced mechanical problems that would later haunt him during qualifying.

Qualifying

Qualifying was a story of highs and lows. Charles Leclerc secured his fourth consecutive pole position in Baku, clocking an impressive 1m 41.610s, beating Oscar Piastri by just 0.321 seconds. Leclerc’s dominance was expected, but Lando Norris’ late mechanical issue left him starting 17th. Sergio Perez secured P4, while Max Verstappen qualified P6 after balance issues and a brush with the wall.

Main Race

The race itself was a masterclass in strategy and skill. Oscar Piastri, driving for McLaren, capitalised on his strong qualifying performance to edge past Leclerc and take the lead during a tense, action-packed race. Leclerc broke the DRS window early but soon found himself between McLaren and Red Bull, with Perez closing in.

Amid tyre strategy debates, with some drivers opting for a two-stop approach, the race took a chaotic turn in the final laps when Carlos Sainz and Perez collided, shaking up the order. Piastri held his nerve and clinched the victory! He added another feather to his cap in what has been an impressive season.

Max Verstappen, battling brake issues, finished P6, while George Russell outpaced teammate Lewis Hamilton for P5. Fernando Alonso and Franco Colapinto impressed with P8 and P9 finishes.
