AFCON 2025: Favourites & Dark Horses

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) promises a thrilling showcase of African soccer, with powerhouse nations and emerging teams set to battle it out in Morocco. Here’s a look at the favourites and dark horses vying for the continent’s top prize.

Bafana Bafana surprised Africa when they finished third at AFCON 2023, which was held in early 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire. Heading into AFCON 2025 in Morocco, which is scheduled to take place from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026, their success would not be as surprising.

However, Bafana can still be considered one of the dark horses in Morocco, where the hosts are favourites to win the tournament. It will be an exciting one for soccer betting enthusiasts.

Favourites: Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria

Morocco

The hosts and reigning FIFA World Cup semi-finalists are among the favourites. With tactical organisation and depth in every position, Morocco is the team to beat. Players like Achraf Hakimi and Sofyan Amrabat bring quality and experience, while head coach Walid Regragui’s structured approach ensures resilience and efficiency.

Egypt

Seven-time champions Egypt remain a force in African soccer. Mohamed Salah leads a side that blends seasoned players with emerging talent. Their strong defensive setup, coupled with Salah’s brilliance in attack, makes them perennial contenders.

Nigeria

The Super Eagles boast one of the most exciting squads in the competition. Strikers Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface provide firepower. Additionally, their midfield balance and defensive stability ensure they’re a formidable opponent. Nigeria’s dynamic style and squad depth keep them in the title conversation.

Algeria

Algeria cannot be overlooked. The 2019 champions boast a talented squad led by Riyad Mahrez and Ismaël Bennacer. Their fluid attacking style and solid defence make them a top contender. Algeria’s recent form has been strong, and they have the experience to handle pressure.

Senegal

The 2021 AFCON champions will aim to take their trophy back. With Sadio Mané at the helm of the attack, there is plenty of firepower upfront. Senegal has a rock-solid defence led by Kalidou Koulibaly with Edouard Mendy in goal. The Lions of Teranga remain one of Africa’s most complete teams. Their experience in big tournaments gives them an edge.

Dark Horses: South Africa, Cameroon, Mali, Tunisia, Angola

South Africa

Bafana Bafana are a resurgent force. After defeating South Sudan 3-0 in their final qualifier, South Sudan coach Nicolas Dupuis declared South Africa and Morocco as the two best teams in Africa — Morocco tactically the best and South Africa technically the best. With players like Relebohile Mofokeng and Teboho Mokoena stepping up, South Africa could surprise many. They have one of the best leagues on the continent, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and now their national team is beginning to step up.

Mali

With players such as Amadou Haidara in their ranks, Mali can never completely be written off. They have consistently proven a challenge for the top teams in Africa.

Cameroon

The Indomitable Lions have always been AFCON heavyweights. Though not as dominant in recent years, they still boast players capable of making a difference, including André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar. Their big-match mentality makes them dangerous.

Angola

The Palancas Negras have made significant strides in recent years. Their direct playing style and attacking flair could catch more fancied teams off guard. With a favourable draw, they might be the tournament’s surprise package.

Tunisia

Tunisia’s well-drilled side often punches above its weight. Known for their disciplined play and tactical awareness, they have the ability to frustrate opponents and spring surprises when it matters most.
