Celtic Suffer Europa League Loss to Celta Vigo

Celtic suffered another damaging Europa League defeat after Celta Vigo overturned their second-half lead at Celtic Park to win 2-1. The Scottish champions have now lost three consecutive matches in the competition.

Despite beating Hearts 7-1 domestically, Martin O’Neill’s side struggled to reproduce that attacking dominance against European opposition. Their latest setback leaves them among four teams yet to earn a point in the 36-team league phase.

Celtic Start Brightly, but Penalty Appeals Go Unanswered

Celtic (1.62) entered the contest hoping to revive their Europa League campaign after two previous defeats. However, Celta Vigo threatened early and forced the hosts to defend their penalty area. Javi Rueda delivered a dangerous cross in the 12th minute, but Colby Donovan intervened with an important block. Three minutes later, Mika Baur prevented Iago Aspas from scoring the breakthrough goal. Consequently, the visitors demonstrated their attacking threat before Celtic established control.

The biggest talking point of the first half arrived when Callum Osmand went down under pressure from Rueda. Celtic supporters immediately appealed for a penalty as the forward approached the penalty area. Nevertheless, the referee refused to award a spot-kick or a free-kick. The incident appeared to occur just outside the box, making the decision particularly frustrating for the home crowd. Camilo Duran received a yellow card for protesting the call. Celtic therefore had to continue searching for an opening without the set-piece opportunity their supporters wanted.

Osmand later missed an opportunity to put Celtic ahead before the interval. In the 43rd minute, the ball fell to him outside the penalty area after Duran failed to connect properly with his attempted shot. However, the forward sent his effort comfortably over the crossbar. Celta Vigo then threatened at the other end, with Ferran Jutgla forcing Sam Johnstone into a save. Although Celtic reached half-time without conceding, the visitors had already shown they could exploit defensive uncertainty.

Mika Baur Gives Celtic the Lead After Half-Time

Celtic made the breakthrough just two minutes after the restart. Haissem Hassan delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, and a deflection created an opportunity for Baur. The midfielder reacted quickly and fired the ball into the net in the 47th minute. Suddenly, the home supporters had reason to believe their team could secure its first points of the Europa League campaign. Moreover, the goal gave O’Neill’s players a platform to build on during the second half.

Celta Vigo responded positively despite falling behind. Aleix Febas nearly restored parity in the 52nd minute after meeting Sergio Carreira’s low delivery. However, his attempt drifted narrowly wide of the post. Celtic survived that warning and continued to look for opportunities to extend their advantage. The hosts appeared capable of taking control, but their failure to score again would prove costly.

The most significant opportunity to double Celtic’s lead arrived in the 63rd minute. Liam Scales rose to meet another Hassan cross and directed a header towards goal. Unfortunately for the home side, the effort struck the crossbar rather than finding the net. Celtic came agonisingly close to establishing a two-goal cushion, which could have changed the course of the contest. Instead, Celta Vigo remained within reach and subsequently punished their opponents.

Javi Rodriguez Scores Twice to Turn the Match Around

Celta Vigo equalised in the 68th minute through Javi Rodriguez. The defender met a free-kick with a powerful header that left Johnstone unable to prevent the goal. Celtic’s advantage disappeared, and the momentum began to shift towards the Spanish visitors. The equaliser exposed the danger of allowing opponents to remain competitive after missing opportunities to extend a lead. Furthermore, it placed immediate pressure on the hosts to respond.

Only four minutes later, Rodriguez struck again to complete the turnaround. Celtic failed to clear the danger, allowing the defender to collect the ball outside the penalty area. He then unleashed an outstanding effort that flew beyond Johnstone and into the net. The strike stunned Celtic Park and gave Celta Vigo a 2-1 advantage. Rodriguez’s quick double transformed a match Celtic had controlled at important moments into another European disappointment.

Celtic struggled to find a response after conceding twice. Their earlier attacking promise had offered hope, particularly following Baur’s opener and Scales’ header against the crossbar. Nevertheless, the hosts could not recover from Rodriguez’s decisive intervention. Forrest eventually created an opportunity for Donovan in the 85th minute, but the resulting effort lacked sufficient power to trouble the goalkeeper. As a result, Celta Vigo held on for victory and left Celtic facing further questions about their European form.

Martin O’Neill Reflects on Celtic’s Missed Opportunities

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill believed the missed chance to make it 2-0 was a crucial moment. Speaking after the match, he highlighted Scales’ header against the crossbar and the subsequent defensive mistakes. O’Neill said: “Where did it all go wrong? Well, we hit the bar with the header; we could have gone 2-0 in front. I think if we had done that we’d probably have won, but forget ifs, buts and maybes, we conceded a goal from a set piece.”

The Celtic manager also acknowledged the quality of Rodriguez’s second goal. He explained how his team lost momentum after the equaliser and then conceded again. O’Neill said: “We just lost a bit of momentum, but conceded the second goal, which was a blinding shot by the player outside the penalty area.” His comments reflected the frustration of losing a match in which Celtic had created opportunities to secure a positive result.

Despite the defeat, O’Neill defended his players’ efforts throughout the evening. He said: “It was a tough evening, but I can’t ask for any more from the players.” The manager added: “Tonight is disappointing because I thought that we could win the game; I felt that beforehand, and while it was a tight match throughout, I still thought we could win.” His assessment suggested that Celtic had entered the contest with genuine belief but failed to turn promising moments into a result.

Celtic Face an Uphill Battle in the Europa League

Celtic’s third consecutive Europa League defeat leaves them under increasing pressure in the league phase. Four teams in the 36-club competition remain without a point, highlighting the difficult position facing the Scottish side. Although plenty of matches remain, Celtic cannot afford many more performances that end without a reward. Their domestic success offers encouragement, but European opponents have repeatedly exposed their vulnerabilities.

O’Neill acknowledged that Celtic still have opportunities to improve their position. He said: “I haven’t looked at the table, but I was told roughly that there’s still a lot of points to play for.” The manager continued: “We have to obviously win a game at Celtic Park, and we have to win away from home, and I think we’re capable of doing that.” Those targets now carry added importance as Celtic attempt to recover from their poor start.

The immediate priority, however, is a return to domestic action. Celtic face Hibernian at Easter Road on Sunday, hoping to carry their Scottish Premiership form into the next fixture. They currently sit four points clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers at the top of the table. That advantage provides some breathing room, although another demanding schedule awaits the squad. Ultimately, Celtic must find a way to balance domestic consistency with improved European performances if they are to rescue their Europa League campaign.

For supporters following the team’s progress, the contrast between domestic results and European struggles remains striking. Celtic’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Hearts demonstrated their attacking potential, yet Celta Vigo exposed the consequences of missed chances and defensive lapses. The result also underlines why expectations must be assessed across different competitions rather than through league position alone. While online sports betting enthusiasts may have changing expectations after consecutive defeats, Celtic’s immediate challenge is to improve their finishing, defend set pieces more effectively and regain confidence on the European stage.
